In the last two years, the Union of UEA Students has received a Gold Impact Award for its commitment to green initiatives. Check out our policies that have been passed at Student Council to see what we’re working on currently. One of our Priority Campaigns this year is Ethical Investment, an international campaign to lobby Universities and institutions to divest from fossil fuels and move their money!

If you want to hear about ethical and environmental projects, why not sign up to The Lense? This is our new e-bulletin that tells you what’s happening on and around campus every week! Email: union.ethics@uea.ac.uk to get added to the mailing list!

UEA Conservation and Wildlife society

Bored of concrete? The UEA Conservation and Wildlife Society (CAWS) can show you the wild side of Norwich and Norfolk. We organise a number of fantastic trips throughout the year, where you will witness some wonderful wildlife spectacles, such as baby Grey Seals on the beach and Red Deer during rutting season. We are also dedicated to conserving Norfolk’s beautiful natural habitats, both on campus with the Campus Conservation Project, and further a field at Buxton Heath, where we go regularly to do some practical conservation work. If you fancy all this, plus the odd drink at some of Norwich’s finest pubs, CAWS is the society for you! We don’t hold regular meetings other than the trips and conservation work we do, but we do send out regular emails of what’s happening. You can join here on Socweb or contact us and arrange to meet on campus. If you sign up online please drop us an email so we can add you to the mailing list, or we won’t know you’ve signed up.

 Carbon Crew

CarbonCrew volunteers are our environmental champions. Staff and students give a little of their time to promote environmental issues and share best practice by for example, putting up posters, switching off lights, reminding colleagues to turn off computers and other electrical equipment when not in use. They are your local point of contact for help and advice on reducing your energy and water consumption, increasing the amount you recycle and helping you choose more sustainable transport options.

Fix it Crew

Just a few hours to spare now and then? Do useful one-off jobs in the community with others, to fit in with your free time. We call on you when needed. Here are some examples of the type of work involved:

          Marshalling crowds

          Litter picking

          Outings for elderly and children

          Street collections

          Helping at a public event

          Many other opportunities

Recently volunteers have helped set up and dismantle displays at Wymondham Arts Centre, the Water Day exhibition at the Forum in Norwich, the BBC Stargazing event in Chapelfields, Norwich, charity collections for Age UK in Sainsburys and Waitrose supermarkets, the Union’s annual Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaign and other events in and around the city.
