Ethical Investment Campaign

UEA STUDENTS BANKING ON SOMETHING BETTER!

JOIN US!

Here at UEA Student Union, we believe in banking on something better. In partnership with the NUS and Move Your Money UK, we are looking to encourage as many people as possible to move their money from the biggest banks to alternative, ethical banks that care about supporting us and the communities we live in.

We hear a lot about how the banking sector has failed us and that we are powerless to fight back. BUT – as a student community in particular, we are their most sought after customers. By moving our money, we can take meaningful action towards positive social change. We did it against Barclays to help Apartheid and we can do it again. Here’s how and why:

BUT WHY ARE BANKS SO BAD?

Despite the 2008 financial crisis, big banks continue to pour money into socially useless lending and risky speculation, not to mention massive staff bonuses. They also have a habit of avoiding their own tax payments.

When big banks actually get round to lending money to the real economy, it is mostly to huge companies with dubious backgrounds. Unethical investments often include passing money to dictators, weapons manufacturers, and large oil companies causing environmental exploitation across the world.
